Don´t be afraid of Photonics

Under this heading at the Production Forum in Vienna at the end of May, kdg CEO Michael Hosp outlined our development from our start as a CD pressing plant to becoming a photonics service provider.

kdg CEO Michael Hosp spoke at the Forum Production 2017 on May 31, 2017 at Tech Gate Vienna about his company's transition to photonics.

"In actual fact, we were predestined for photonics, we just didn't know it", is how kdg CEO Michael Hosp summed up his lecture at this year's Production Forum in Vienna at the end of May, which took place at the invitation of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology on the occasion of the launch of the "Production of the Future" initiative. "We were pushed quite far, like the river Lech on our doorstep, which also had to channel its course first", said Hosp about the very chequered development path that the company took in the last three decades.

"In retrospect, I would say that, without a doubt, digitalisation was our hardest and most important teacher. Because, as early as thirty years ago, digitalisation arrived to us in the Lech Valley as the third CD pressing plant in Europe at the time. That is to say: By this time, we know exactly what pressure change brings for a company." The technological step from the Compact disc to optical components was actually almost a logical one, according to Hosp, "especially since we were already at home in the top tier of optical injection moulding with our optical storage media." But, of course, jumping into a completely different market constitutes a huge challenge for an existing organisation. "Fortunately we didn't have any time to be afraid, we simply set off on our way."
